Obsidian is a local-first note-taking and knowledge-management app built around Markdown files in a folder you control. It lets you write ordinary notes, link them together, search across the collection, and shape the workspace with plugins, themes, and views instead of locking information into a proprietary document format.
The central idea is that notes become more useful when connections are easy to create and revisit. A project brief can link to meeting notes, research, people, tasks, and source material, while backlinks and graph views reveal where a topic already appears elsewhere in the vault.
Obsidian is flexible enough to become a daily journal, research library, writing environment, or personal wiki. That flexibility is its strength and its cost: the app can remain simple, but a large plugin ecosystem and many possible workflows can make it tempting to design a system before doing the work.
