HandBrake fits archival, media-server, sharing, and playback-compatibility workflows where the aim is to make a finished video more usable. It is particularly valuable for turning a large master or awkward source format into an intentionally chosen delivery file.

It does not replace an editor for cutting a story, mixing audio, or designing titles. Keep a clear record of the source and export settings so a good result can be reproduced later.

HandBrake is free and open source, processes media on the computer, and does not require an account. Encoding can use substantial CPU, GPU, storage, and battery, while protected or copy-restricted media may not be readable. Download only from the official project and keep the source file until the completed encode has been inspected.
