VoiceInk is an open-source dictation app that turns speech into text at the cursor across macOS applications. Its default local models process recordings on the Mac, while optional enhancement tools can restructure a rough spoken draft, remove filler, or adapt the result to a particular writing task.
A configurable shortcut starts recording, and the finished transcript can be inserted into the active text field. Modes, per-app triggers, custom vocabulary, and replacements make the workflow more adaptable than macOS Dictation for people who write repeatedly by voice.

The main limitation is compatibility: the distributed app requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14.4 or later, with 8 GB of memory recommended. Output still needs review for names, punctuation, and technical language, and more capable local models can use additional storage and memory.
Privacy and requirements
VoiceInk requires microphone access to record and Accessibility permission to insert text into other applications. The developer says local transcription, history, optional saved audio, vocabulary, prompts, and preferences remain on the device; transcripts are retained until deleted unless automatic cleanup is configured.
Optional cloud transcription sends audio to the provider selected by the user. Optional AI enhancement sends transcribed text rather than audio, and clipboard or window context is included only when enabled. Provider retention policies then apply, while user-supplied API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain.
Pricing
VoiceInk offers a free trial and can be built from its GPL-3.0 source code. The prebuilt app is a one-time purchase starting at $25 for one Mac, with higher-priced licenses for two or three devices; the developer currently includes lifetime updates and does not charge a subscription.
